  10. Hi everyone! Just joined from Tuscon AZ. Stay at home mom of two. Looking to getting to know everyone!
  11. FAQs around breastfeeding

Here's some good info on breastfeeding. How often should I breastfeed my baby? As often as he/she wants to eat! Generally, 8-12 times per day is average. Don't compare yourself to someone who formula feeds, as they may feed less. Your baby will let you know when he or she is hungry, and if they do, feed them! Breast milk disgest much easier than formula, therefore it goes through them faster. This is why breastfed babies usually require more milk than formula fed babies. If you can breastfeed, do! As it provides far more nutrients than formula. After the first month or two, your baby will feed less (usually 7-9 times a day). 1 1/2 to 3 hours is how often most babies will want to feed. As they get older, they'll feed less often and may adapt a more reliable schedule. Some might feed every 90 minutes, whereas other may feed every 2 to 3 hours. Do not let your newborn go more than 4 hours without feeding. Are feeding intervals counted from when my baby starts or stops nursing? The clock should start from the time your baby starts feeding, not stops. If your first feeding started at 8 am and ended at 8:20 am, then the next feeding started at 10 am and ends at 10:15 am, you would be feeding every two hours.  How do I know when my baby is hungry? Some obvious signs to tell when your baby is hungry are as follows: They move their head from side to side (this is called rooting). They keep opening their mouth and/or sticking their tongue out. They may place their hands and fists near or on their mouth. They may pucker their lips in anticipation you're going to feed them. Snuggling up against your chest or breasts. How do I know when my baby is full? Your baby will slow down and become uninterested in sucking. He/she may turn away from your breast. Watching for these signs, as you don't want the to choke on the milk. If they do start to chock, hold them upright. They recover very quickly, so don't panic. How long does it take to nurse? It really depends on both you and your baby.  How fast your milk comes out. How fast your baby sucks on your breast. Your let-down reflex (this is what causes milk to flow from the nipple) How your baby is positioned on your breast. Some babies take time to latch on, while others latch on immediately. How tired your baby is, or if he or she is distracted. Every mom and baby are different, and every feeding time may differ. There are many factors. Again, feed your baby until they become uninterested. Generally, each nursing session may last 5-20 minutes per breast. How often should I alternate breasts? One breast may have more milk than the other. When breasts become engorged, they can become painful. Try to feed your baby with the fuller breast, and keep the milk supply in each breast equal. You'll need to feel them to see which one has more/less. You may also want to pump and save the milk in bottles if you find yourself having more milk than your baby wants. Usually, 5 minutes per breast when feeding is average. Some need 10 or 15 minutes on each side. Again, you'll just need to gauge it upon how they feel. You may find yourself emptying both breasts while nursing. It all depends on supply and demand. How often should I burp my baby? If your baby spits up frequently, then it's a good idea to burp them more often. Generally, burp them after they have fed off each breast. If you don't, they will most likely spit up or get a stomach ache.  How do I know my baby is eating enough? Here are some good indicators: Your baby seems satisfied after eating, and is quiet. Has regular bowel movements (some babies poop after every feeding!). Sleeps well and seems content. Is alert when awake. Is gaining weight. Here some indicators your baby is not eating enough: Does not appear satisfied after eating.  Seems hungry often. Is fussy or cries a lot Is not gaining weight Not making enough soiled diapers  If you're concerned your baby is not eating enough, then call your doctor. You may need to supplement with formula, or perhaps he/she just isn't latching on correctly.  My baby wants to comfort nurse, is this ok? Yes, however don't let it become a problem as your child gets older. If they are comfort nursing, try using a passifier instead.  My baby seems hungrier than normal, is this ok? Your baby may be going through what's called a "growth spurt". This is when they grow faster than usual, and may happen at any time. Most commonly, growth spurts occur around: 7 to 14 days old 2 months 4 months  6 months During this time, you'll find yourself feeding your baby more frequently. Don't be alarmed, as this is normal.
  12. Wow, you made it through your first and second trimester! This is going to be a breeze.  In only three months, you'll have your very own baby.  The third trimester usually isn't too uncomfortable. Here's what to expect... Backaches are common. You are carrying another human inside of you, and with that comes added weight. Your back may feel achy and sore. You may feel some discomfort in your pelvis and hips, as your ligaments prepare for labor. Always use good posture, and sit up straight while sitting. At night, you can use a pregnancy pillow, or perhaps just tuck a pillow between your legs. Wear low heeled comfortable shoes with good arch support. You can use a heating pad at night to help ease the back pain. If the pain is bad, check with your doctor to see if acetaminophen is ok to take. You may also want to try getting a pregnancy massage; they can help wonders. If you happen to bleed or spot, see your doctor. While it may not be anything urgent, it could be a sign of a problem. Always best to get checked out as soon as possible. The Braxton Hicks you experienced during your second trimester will continue, and they will become a bit more intense. Sometimes they will be rather strong. If they become regular (close to one another), get to the hospital right away.  By end of the third trimester, your breasts will have grown by as much as 2 pounds. Make sure you're wearing that supportive bra you bought! You may even notice a yellowish fluid leaking from your nipples. This is normal, and it's called colostrum. This will nourish your baby during the first few days after birth. You may see more vagina discharge during your third trimester, however if the flow is heavy enough to soak your panty liners, call your doctor. As you get close to your delivery date, you may see a thick, clear and slight pink discharge. This is your mucus plug, and it's a sign that your cervix has begun dialating in prepartion for labor. If you experience a sudden rush of fluid, it may mean that your water has broken. Usually, your water won't break until after the contraction have begun, though it's possible to break before. Get to the hospital as soon as possible once your water breaks. The fatigue will continue. Do your best with taking naps, short walks, and staying active. The frequent urination will continue until you deliver. It's common to pee a little when you sneeze, laugh or cough.  By now, you're going to go into labor any minute. Just relax, and everything will go smooth.
  13. Phew! You made to the second trimester!  See, it wasn't that bad, was it? You're 1/3 of the way there, in just 6 short months, you'll be delivering your beautiful baby.  Up till now, you have probably experienced quite a bit, both physically and emotionally. Well, things should become a little easier, at least for the next few months. Here's what you can expect... Your breasts will continue to grow due to the additional fat accumulating and in preparation for making milk. If you experienced tenderness, it may subside a bit. Remember, don't forget to get a supportive bra, it will be a huge help! Your stomach will become noticeably bigger, and expect to gain 3-4 pounds a month until delivery. As your uterus becomes heavier and expands to make room for the baby, so will your abdomen. If you find yourself gaining significantly less or more weight, see your doctor. Get ready for the Braxton Hicks contractions! This is your uterus preparing for the big day, as it needs to work out in order to become strong. They're generally rather weak, and you may not even notice most of them. If they cause pain or become regular, see your doctor immediately.  You may notice the pigment of your skin change colors. Some women notice dark patches on their face. You may also get a linea nigra, which is a dark line down your abdomen. This is normal, and they will most likely fade away after delivery. Try to stay out of the if possible, or use good sunblock, as sun will make the blemishes worse. Unfortunately you're going to get stretch marks. Usually they are pink, red or purple streaks along your abdomen, breasts, buttocks or thighs. They may even become itchy. Find some good natural moisturizers to help lessen the itch. Most stretch mark will fade, so don't be concerned.  When pregnant, circulation increases. This means more blood flows through your body's mucous membranes, which can cause the lining of your nose and airway to swell. This results in snoring, congestion and nosebleeds. Your gums may even become more sensitive. Try using a soft bristle toothbrush, as to not irritate your gums. Leg cramps are common, and usually hit you at night. Hot showers and stretches before bed will definitely help! White vaginal discharge is normal. This acidic discharge helps keep your vagina clean and free of bacteria. If it becomes strong smelling, green or yellow, contract your doctor as it may be an infection. Pain, itching and soreness are not normal either. Bladder and kidney infections may arise. If this happens, contact your doctor for medication, and you'll be prescribed medication which is safe while pregnant. Never leave it untreated, as infections increase the risk of pregnancy complications.  Hang in there, and you'll be your third and final trimester in no time!
  14. When you're ready to get pregnant, you can't wait! Your window of opportunity is slim, and if you miss it, you'll have to wait another month. We know how frustrating it can be, however you're not alone. Here are some tips on helping you get pregnant quicker... A good rule of thumb is to meeting with your doctor to review your history, any medication you're on, etc. A complete gynecological exam is always a good first start. Get a full and complete blood panel as well.  Get off birth control! It may take a cycle or two being off birth control before your regular cycle returns. Remove an IUD if you have one. Removing an IUD should allow your cycle to return immediately. If you're on Depo-Provera, talk to your doctor on the best approach for weaning yourself off. Find out when you ovulate. Check out the fertility charting section of the forum for more details. This will definitely help increases your chances of getting pregnant. It can take a few months to identify the pattern, however it will be well worth the wait! Fertility charting includes tracking your basal body temperature and cervix mucus. If you detect any spotting or bleeding, call your doctor right away. Sometimes it's normal, but always best to be safe. Use an ovulation predictor kit. Check your local drug store or online for a kit, they shouldn't cost more than $30. We've heard very good success with these kits! They are convenient and easy to use, and generally dramatically increase your odds of getting pregnant. It's a good idea to use this in conjunction with your fertility charting. You can also try a fertility monitor. Again, check your local drug store or online. They can be rather pricey, though they do help predict the best time to have sex. Having sex before ovulating helps increase your chances of getting pregnant as well.  Have sex daily, or every other day. Don't worry about having an orgasm, this is about making a baby. It's normal for sex when trying to conceive, not to be the funnest thing to do.  Don't use lube (if you can help it). If you need lube, then be sure to buy one that is safe for baby making. Pre-Seed is a good one to get.  If you smoke or drink, quit. This goes for the men too! Limit your caffeine intake (cut it out entirely if possible). Again, this goes for men as well. Eat healthy, and try to stay away from fast food. If you like seafood, then stay away from fish which are high in mercury, such as tuna, shark, swordfish, etc. Shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish are good. Relax, this should be somewhat fun.  Don't take the task too seriously, and please remember, good things come to those who wait (or are patient).  Good luck! Let us know how things are going.
  15. In order to get pregnant, you have to have near-perfect timing! It's important that the conditions are just right for when the egg and sperm meet. Your menstrual cycle can help you identify when your body is ready to start the process. Generally, a woman with a 28-day menstrual cycle has 5-6 days each month when she can conceive - the day one of her ovaries releases an egg (call ovulation) and the 4-5 days prior. To have the best chance at getting pregnant, you'll need to time sex within this window.  In order to figure out your window, you'll want to start charting your menstrual cycle and noting how long it lasts. Day 1 is the first day of your period. Remember, not every cycle is the same, therefore you'll want to keep track for at least a few months. You'll soon begin to see a pattern, and have a good clue as to when the window of opportunity is best! Next, subtract 18 days from the length of your shortest cycle. Generally, this will begin the fertile window. Subtract 11 days from the length of your longest cycle, and this is the last day you're likely to be fertile. Having sex between those two dates will give you the best chance at getting pregnant.      Basal Body Temperature Another way to help identify when you're fertile is to measure your Basal Body Temperature (aka BBT). This is your temperature when you first wake up in the morning. Generally, it rises slightly just after you ovulate (sometimes less than a degree), and will stay higher until your period starts. If you record your temperature every day, you'll begin to see the subtle changes that mean one of your ovaries has released an egg. Here's how to take your BBT It's important to use a basal body thermometer (check Amazon), as they are more accurate than your typical thermometer.  It will even measure a fraction of a degree! Be sure to take your temperature at the same time each morning for best results (before you get out of bed). You'll want to keep it nearby. Remember, smoking, drinking, not sleeping well, etc can all affect your BBT. Unfortunately your BBT won't tell you exactly when you have ovulated, and it will probably take 2-3 months before you recognize a pattern. Typically, you're most likely to get pregnant a few days before your ovary releases an egg, ad then another 12-24 hours thereafter. When you temperature has spiked for 3 days, your window of opportunity begins to close.   Cervical Mucus As your ovaries get ready to release an egg, a build up of mucus will occur around your cervix. Just before and during ovulation, the amount, color and texture of it changes to make it easier for you to get pregnant. It will become really slippery (resembling egg whites) and may also be very stretchy. This stage should last 3 to 4 days, which again is when you're chances of getting pregnant are high. Here's how to check your cervical mucus Check the opening of your vagina for mucus a few times a day, and take note whether it's cloudy, sticky, clear or slippery. Chart both your cervical mucus along with your basal body temperature, and this will help create even a clearer picture of where you are in your cycle. Breastfeeding and using hygiene products can change your mucus, which may throw off the indicators.    It's a good idea to use a spreadsheet, as you'll be able to enter and compare data with ease. Good luck!
  16. Being pregnant can be rough, especially in the beginning. During your first trimester, you're going to experience all kinds of things, though we want you to be prepared, not scared. None of them are anything that bad, and some people don't even know their pregnant during their first trimester! Morning sickness is one of the most common first trimester symptoms. Approximately 85% of pregnant women will experience some sort of nausea and vomiting. Unfortunately it's not just in the morning either. No one really knows what causes morning sickness, though some  believe it may be related to the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin. The more of it that's in your system, the more nauseous you become. One good thing to having morning sickness, is that some physicians believe the more queezy you are, the less chances of miscarrying or premature delivery. See, there's a bright side to it! You can help minimize morning sickness by trying some of these remedies: Eat mini-meals throughout the day. Eating frequent small meals will help to ease digestion and keep your tummy filled. As you're probably aware, being nauseous on an empty stomach is generally worse than being queezy on a full stomach.  Eat bland foods. While you may crave a big fat juicy hamburger, chances are it's going to upset your stomach. Ginger is a great natural soother for upset stomachs. You can put freshly grated ginger in your tea (make sure it's decaf). B6 supplements will help your stomach empty faster. Check with your doctor first, on how much you should take.  Food cravings and aversions You're going to crave some of the craziest stuff! In addition, some of your once favorite foods may soon become your arch nemesis! It's not uncommon to be repelled by certain foods, and crave other foods you generally wouldn't find appetizing. Always remember to eat healthy, and never over indulge.  You're nose will be more sensitive than that beagle down the street Well, not really, but your sense of smell will certainly become heightened! Many women report that their sense of smell drastically increases. Some believe this is to help them stay away from foods that may have high bacteria, or natural toxin. The heightened sense of smell will diminish as the months go on.  You may become more tired It's not uncommon to be feel tired all day. Remember, you're making a human being! It takes a lot of energy to do that, and much of your energy will be focused on the baby. Make sure you get your blood tested to ensure you have everything your body needs. Sometimes iron (and other) supplements will be required.  Even though your tired, it's important to stay active. Go for short walk, or do some light stretching. Take prenatal vitamins. Sleep when you can; try to go to bed earlier and get up later. If you work, take a quick nap at your desk.  Frequent urination is very common. There is an increase of pressure on your bladder, so you may find yourself having to use the restroom more often. This is normal, as your bladder never really empties when pregnant. Do not cut back on your liquids, staying hydrated is very important! While inconvenient, drink a lot. Stop drinking caffeine if possible.  Sometimes acne can occur, and you'll feel like a teenager all over again. To help with this, use an oil-free moisturizer, and don't scrub or over wash your face. It'll go away soon... Some woman report shortness of breath. There is a lot of extra blood inside of you which requires more oxygen then usual, so this is normal. Take long slow deep breaths when you feel shortness of breath come on. Headaches are unfortunately not uncommon. They are usually caused by low blood sugar, so be sure to eat well. If you get migraines, talk to your doctor. Generally, acetaminophen is considered safe for pregnant woman, however it's always best to consult your doctor first. Dry eyes or changing vision may occur due to the increased blood circulation. You can try eye drops to help lubricate your eyes if needed. Your breasts will swell, as they are preparing for milk delivery! You may want to buy larger bras; buy the kind designed for breast feeding if possible.  Libido may increase or decrease dramatically. Every woman is different. If you detect a change in either direction, it's normal.  You'll be on an emotional roller coaster, and it's fine. Just be sure to get plenty of sleep, and go for walks outside. See nature, don't stay inside as it may depress you.  Good luck during your first trimester!
